When crude oil is produced, it naturally carries sand, salt, and other solid debris. Water is also added upstream to help the crude flow more easily through pipelines. Although refineries eventually remove these impurities, they continue to accumulate during transportation and storage.

Inside crude oil tanks, these solids and water settle to the bottom, creating Bottom Sludge & Water (BS&W). Over time, a phenomenon known as “Sanding-In” occurs:

  • Heavy solids compact into a dense, immobile layer
  • Storage capacity is reduced
  • Pump-out becomes difficult or impossible
  • Operators are forced to empty the tank for lengthy, costly, and environmentally challenging cleaning operations

This is one of the most expensive and disruptive issues in terminal operations — and one that proper mixing can prevent entirely.

Custom Engineered Side-Entry Mixers

A dedicated range of industrial side-entry mixers for large-volume storage tanks. . Designed specifically for mounting on the wall at the base of the tank, this agitator is compact and energy-efficient

How Milton Roy Side-Entry Mixers Stop Sanding-In at the Source

Milton Roy Mixing’s Side-Entry Mixers are engineered to keep BS&W fully suspended, ensuring a homogeneous tank and eliminating the conditions that cause Sanding-In.

Engineered for Crude Oil Tanks

Mounted directly on the tank’s side nozzle, our side-entry agitators offer:

  • Minimal vibration
  • Fewer moving parts
  • Longer mechanical seal life
  • Easy, fast maintenance

While running, the impeller generates the ideal fluid velocity distribution to sweep the tank bottom and prevent sediment from settling.

High-Efficiency SABRE™ Impeller

Our proprietary SABRE 4‑blade impeller delivers the industry’s highest flow at the lowest horsepower, providing 15–20% energy savings compared with conventional mixers — all while maximizing suspension efficiency.

The SABRE™ impeller generates powerful, long‑distance flow that keeps solids suspended and uniformly distributed throughout the tank, eliminating the formation of sludge layers. By stopping water from settling at the bottom, the mixer maintains a controlled emulsion that supports more predictable dehydration and reduces residual waste.

This consistent mixing minimizes dead zones and allows operators to fully utilize the tank’s nominal capacity while significantly decreasing manual cleaning, unplanned shutdowns, and maintenance costs associated with BS&W accumulation.

Optimized Designs Through Advanced CFD Simulation

To guarantee mixing efficiency that matches your operational constraints, our engineering teams rely on advanced CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) simulations.

These analyses allow us to:

  • Size and position side-entry mixers accurately
  • Predict flow patterns and suspension behavior
  • Optimize energy consumption
  • Ensure reliable, long-term performance

Every tank is unique — and our solutions are designed accordingly.
