Polymer chemistry fundamentals
Digestate solids carry a net negative surface charge. Cationic polyacrylamide polymers neutralize that charge and bridge particles into strong, shear-resistant flocs that release water. Selecting the right polymer is a matching exercise across three variables:
- Charge density — matched to the solids' charge demand (higher for high-protein/colloidal digestate).
- Molecular weight — drives floc size and strength; too high wastes polymer, too low gives weak flocs.
- Charge type — cationic for most digestate; anionic in specific mineral-solids cases.
