Mining operations are among the most water-intensive industrial activities on the planet. From mineral extraction and ore processing to tailings management and site remediation, every stage of mining generates complex water streams that require precise chemical treatment to protect the environment, comply with increasingly stringent discharge regulations, and enable water recycling that reduces freshwater consumption.

The challenges are formidable. Mining water streams are characterized by extreme variability in pH, dissolved metals, suspended solids, sulfates, and other contaminants. Process water must be conditioned to support extraction efficiency. Tailings supernatant and decant water must be treated before discharge or reuse. Acid mine drainage (AMD) — one of the most persistent environmental legacies of mining — requires long-term treatment solutions that maintain compliance for decades.

Milton Roy provides the chemical dosing, mixing, and process control technologies that mining operators need to manage these challenges reliably and cost-effectively. Our metering pumps, industrial mixers, and engineered dosing systems are proven in the harshest mining environments, from open-pit copper mines to underground gold operations, lithium brine extraction facilities, and coal mine water treatment plants.

Key Mining Water Treatment Applications

Acid mine drainage is formed when sulfide minerals — particularly pyrite (FeS₂) — are exposed to oxygen and water, producing sulfuric acid and mobilizing heavy metals including iron, manganese, aluminum, copper, zinc, and arsenic. AMD can have pH values as low as 2.0 and dissolved metal concentrations orders of magnitude above discharge limits.

Treatment typically involves lime or caustic neutralization, followed by coagulation, flocculation, clarification, and sludge management. Milton Roy metering pumps deliver precise, consistent dosing of lime slurry, caustic soda, ferric chloride, and polymer flocculants — even under the highly variable flow conditions and aggressive chemical environments typical of AMD treatment.

Why Milton Roy for Mining?

  • API 675 compliant metering pumps designed for the harshest environments — corrosive chemicals, abrasive slurries, extreme temperatures
  • ±1% dosing accuracy across full turndown range — critical for reagent optimization and cost control
  • ATEX/IECEx certified options for hazardous area installations
  • Proven lime slurry handling — purpose-built liquid ends resist scaling, abrasion, and blockage
  • Remote and harsh environment capability — low maintenance, high reliability, minimal operator intervention
  • Global service network with mining expertise in Americas, EMEA, and Asia-Pacific
